Abstract
Introduction. Determining dental and skeletal maturity is highly important in planning orthodontic therapy. Due to possible discrepancies between dental and skeletal maturity, it is necessary to research this topic to improve orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to examine differences between dental and skeletal age of girls aged 9 to 11 years.
Material and Methods. The study included medical records of 56 girls aged 9 to 11 years who were treated at the Department of Orthodontics, Clinic of Dental Medicine of Vojvodina. Dental age was determined using the Demirjian method on orthopantomographic images, while skeletal age was assessed using cephalometric radiographs by measuring cervical vertebrae. The results were statistically analysed for the entire sample and separately for age groups of 9, 10, and 11 years. Mean values, standard deviation, minimum and maximum values for chronological, dental, and skeletal age were calculated, along with statistical significance using the t-test.
Results. A statistically significant difference between dental and skeletal maturity was found for the entire sample and for the 9- and 10-year age groups. For the 11-year age group, no statistically significant difference was observed.
Conclusion. The results indicate that there is no consistent and reliable correlation between skeletal and dental maturity, which should be considered into account when planning orthodontic therapy.
