Abstract
Introduction. Bipolar disorder represents a mood disorder whose aetiology and pathogenesis remain poorly understood. One proposed theory suggests a connection between this condition and uric acid, the final product of purine metabolism. Identifying measurable biomarkers for the prediction and diagnosis of bipolar disorder could open new avenues for a deeper understanding of not only this condition but also psychiatric disorders in general. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a statistically significant association exists between the different phases of bipolar disorder and uric acid concentrations.
Material and Methods. This retrospective study included all patients hospitalised over the past two years at the Clinic for Psychiatry in Novi Sad with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Using data extracted from patient medical records, uric acid concentrations were analysed and compared between patients in manic and depressive phases.
Results. A total of 103 patients were included in the analyses, of whom 27.18% (n = 28) were male, and 72.82% (n = 75) were female. The mean duration of psychiatric treatment was 10.62 years. Of the total sample, 43.69% (n = 45) of patients were in the manic phase, whilst 56.31% (n = 58) were in the depressive phase of bipolar disorder. The mean uric acid concentration in the manic phase was 342.62 μmol/l ± 105.62, compared to 320.24 μmol/l ± 97.81 in the depressive phase.
Conclusion. No statistically significant association was found between the uric acid concentration and the phase of bipolar disorder.
